Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to discover and understand the essential meaning of admission after paraquat poisoning.

Methods: The data were collected from August 2011 to May 2012 through individual in-depth interviews and all interviews were recorded. A total of 30 patients with paraquat poisoning participated in the study. Data were analyzed using van Manen¡¯s hermeneutic phenomenological analysis.

Results: The essential themes that uncover to the context of the four existential grounds of body, time, space, and relationship with other people were as follows: unimaginable pain, exhausted body due to overturning gastrointestinal upset, soul loss, unintentionally occurring, hoping get away from the moment of death, a deep sense of regret and remorse, mind being crammed by arriving the specialized hospital, feeling that family is the focal point in my life, expecting my future life after receiving the attention, expecting a change, a wave of fear on having been known to others.

Conclusion: This result of study provides thick description and understanding of patients with paraquat poisoning who are admitted in a hospital. Based on the results, health professionals could develop effective empathic nursing interventions to meet emotional and psychological need of these patients.
